What is Concrete and How Is It Made?

Concrete is a material made of water, an aggregate material, usually a fine or coarse aggregate) coarse granular material (the fine and coarse aggregate or filler) embedded in a hard matrix of material (the cement or binder) that fills the space among the aggregate particles and glues them together

According to the Portland Cement Association:

"Concrete is a mixture of paste and aggregates, or rocks. The paste, composed of portland cement and water, coats the surface of the fine (small) and coarse (larger) aggregates. Through a chemical reaction called hydration, the paste hardens and gains strength to form the rock-like mass known as concrete.

Within this process lies the key to a remarkable trait of concrete: it's plastic and malleable when newly mixed, strong and durable when hardened. These qualities explain why one material, concrete, can build skyscrapers, bridges, sidewalks and superhighways, houses and dams."

Mixing and Batching Concrete

Mixing concrete is part science and part balancing act. In lay, mixing concrete means simply to blend the components needed to make a concrete mixture together into a workable substance. Mixing can be done a number of different ways ranging from mixing with a machine to mixing by hand.

In order to achieve a concrete mixture that can be used for your next major project, understanding how batching concrete works and the importance of it to the project. successful mixture can be achieved without the proper batching of all materials. Batching is the actual act of measuring by volume or by weight the needed ingrediants to make concrete. Understanding batching is critical. Without the proper mixture of water, aggregate and other compounds, the final concrete won't come out to the job's specifications.

Batch concrete ingredients should be mixed to achieve the following:

  • uniform in appearance (including luster, consistency)
  • even distribution of materials in the entire mixture

A concrete is said to be adequately mixed if the samples taken from different portions of a batch will have:

  • the same unit weight, 
  • air content, 
  • slump,
  • coarse-aggregate content
